Why Ondo Abandoned Its Blockchain to Build an Execution Network Instead

Crypto has spent years competing to build faster blockchains. Ondo Finance thinks the next battle won't be about building another chain at all. Instead, it will be about execution.

According to reporting by The Block, Ondo Finance has unveiled the Ondo Network, a new execution layer designed to deliver centralized exchange (CEX)-like trading speeds while preserving self-custody and onchain settlement.

The launch marks a strategic shift away from Ondo Chain, as the company concludes that execution—not settlement—is now the biggest bottleneck preventing onchain markets from competing with traditional exchanges.

Ondo is targeting a different audience. Rather than building a consumer blockchain or a crypto-native trading venue, it is creating infrastructure for institutions, asset managers and issuers bringing real-world assets (RWAs) onchain.

If Hyperliquid is rebuilding crypto exchanges and Robinhood is rebuilding retail investing, Ondo is trying to rebuild capital markets.

Why Ondo Changed Course

When Ondo first announced Ondo Chain, the goal was to build dedicated blockchain infrastructure for tokenized financial assets.

But after developing Ondo Perps and working with customers, the company reached a different conclusion. Settlement wasn't the biggest obstacle. Execution was.

Traditional blockchains execute trades, verify transactions and settle assets on the same ledger. While that architecture delivers transparency and security, it also introduces latency that makes matching the performance of centralized exchanges difficult.

Ondo's new architecture separates execution from settlement. Trades execute inside secure hardware enclaves for speed and privacy, while assets continue settling on Ethereum.

What Happens to ONDO?

Despite the architectural shift, the ONDO token's role remains unchanged.

According to De Bode, it will continue serving as the governance and incentive token for Ondo's ecosystem while becoming increasingly central as the execution network decentralizes through additional attestors and economic security.

For years, blockchain innovation focused on making settlement faster. Ondo is betting the next chapter will be won by whoever makes execution feel invisible.
