Schwab Adds Solana, Avalanche and Chainlink to Crypto Platform
By Piper
Five months after Schwab Crypto opened with just Bitcoin and Ether, Charles Schwab named its next three tokens: Solana, Avalanche, and Chainlink. The brokerage announced on August 27 that SOL, AVAX, and LINK will come to its retail platform "in the coming months." None of the three are live yet.
The selection of Chainlink is the most structurally interesting choice in the set. Avalanche adds another Layer 1 to Schwab's lineup; Chainlink gives clients direct exposure to crypto infrastructure rather than another general-purpose blockchain. It is the only oracle network — and arguably the only middleware play — on any traditional brokerage's direct-trading shelf.
Schwab now oversees $13.04 trillion in client assets across 39.9 million brokerage accounts, after posting record Q2 2026 net revenue of $7.1 billion. That distribution footprint is the real variable. The platform reaches an audience that has never navigated a crypto-native exchange, which means Schwab's curation choices carry more weight than a Coinbase listing would for the same asset.
A Curated Five, Not a Catalogue
Schwab describes the additions as part of a plan to "thoughtfully expand" its digital asset offering with established cryptocurrencies that align with client demand. The company plans to add more cryptocurrencies and digital assets over time but did not set a specific launch date or name further tokens.
That restraint is a deliberate contrast to crypto-native rivals. Schwab has framed the move as an effort to pick established digital currencies with clear investor demand, rather than flooding the platform with dozens of assets the way Coinbase or Robinhood do. Morgan Stanley has also placed Solana alongside Bitcoin and Ethereum in its planned E*Trade crypto rollout, giving SOL another route into traditional brokerage accounts.
"With this expansion, clients will have more choices to build a digital asset allocation alongside the investing and banking experience they know and trust at Schwab." — Joe Vietri, Head of Digital Assets, Charles Schwab, August 27, 2026
Trades on Schwab Crypto carry a fee of 75 basis points — 0.75% of the dollar value of each trade. The service operates in most US states, with the notable exceptions of New York and Louisiana, and remains unavailable in US territories or foreign markets. Its April launch plan included future support for additional cryptocurrencies as well as eventual deposit and withdrawal functionality for clients bringing existing crypto holdings onto the platform.
What the LINK Listing Does — and Doesn't — Do
Chainlink's inclusion is a recognition of institutional legitimacy as much as a trading opportunity. LINK recently ranked fourth among blockchain protocols in Fortune's 2026 Crypto 100, behind Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana. XRP, ZEC, and LINK had all risen over 30% during the broad altcoin rally earlier in August.
LINK's current price sits around $11.39, with a 24-hour trading volume of roughly $228 million. The token remains well below its all-time high: LINK ran to approximately $52.70 in the 2021 bull market, surrendered more than 80% in the bear market that followed, and in August 2026 still trades far under that peak.
The network's on-chain case is more current than its price chart suggests. Chainlink's Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol has been expanding aggressively — CCIP is currently processing roughly $18 billion per month.
Chainlink has also announced Link:NYC, an invitation-only event for October 29 in New York aimed at senior banking and capital markets leaders, focused on accelerating onchain finance adoption. A Schwab listing puts a retail on-ramp directly adjacent to that institutional buildout.
The honest caveat is that listing and demand are not the same event. Schwab handed 39.9 million account holders a path to trading LINK, but a listing and a demand event are very different things.
Schwab also maintains the right to delay or withdraw any token listing depending on regulatory changes or additional risk assessments. The platform's tightly curated shelf and conservative rollout cadence mean actual trading volumes will take time to materialize — and retail crypto allocation behaviour inside traditional brokerage accounts is still largely uncharted.
The Brokerage Race for Crypto Shelf Space
The move expands Schwab's push into a market where traditional brokerages are increasingly competing for crypto investors. Schwab is pairing the trading product with research, education, market commentary, and 24-hour customer support — a bundle designed to convert existing account holders rather than attract crypto-native traders.
Charles Schwab Premier Bank maintains custody of Schwab Crypto accounts, keeping the product inside the regulated banking perimeter that Schwab's client base expects. That custody structure, combined with a deliberately short asset list, may matter more to the next wave of retail crypto participants — people who want exposure but won't open a separate exchange account — than to anyone already active onchain.
For Chainlink specifically, a Schwab listing does something no DeFi integration can: it puts LINK on the same screen as a client's stock portfolio, 401(k) rollover, and money-market fund. Whether that adjacency converts into sustained flows depends on how aggressively Schwab promotes the asset and whether CCIP's institutional traction generates the kind of mainstream-media coverage that drives brokerage-account buyers. Neither is guaranteed, but the structural access is now in place.
