Mastercard Completes Its Biggest Stablecoin Bet Yet With BVNK Acquisition
By Lidia Yadlos
Mastercard is moving deeper into blockchain infrastructure. The payments giant has completed its acquisition of BVNK, bringing the stablecoin payments company into its global network as it expands beyond traditional card rails.
The deal, first announced in March, is reportedly worth up to $1.8 billion, making it Mastercard's largest digital asset acquisition to date. Rather than building stablecoin infrastructure from scratch, Mastercard is buying a platform already used by businesses to move money between bank accounts and blockchain networks.
Stablecoins Become Part of Mastercard's Strategy
BVNK operates behind the scenes, providing APIs that let businesses send, receive, convert and settle payments using both fiat currencies and stablecoins.
Its technology supports cross-border payments, treasury management, merchant settlements and global payouts, giving enterprises access to blockchain-based payment rails without replacing existing banking infrastructure.
Mastercard said combining BVNK's on-chain technology with its own network will help financial institutions, fintechs and businesses scale payments using stablecoins and tokenized assets.
During its latest earnings call, Mastercard highlighted digital assets as a key long-term growth area, pointing to rising demand for blockchain-based cross-border settlement. For BVNK, the deal marks the next stage of a rapid rise.
Founded in 2021, the company attracted backing from investors including Tiger Global, Haun Ventures, Visa Ventures, Coinbase Ventures and Citi Ventures, building payment infrastructure that now connects businesses across more than 130 countries.
The acquisition signals that stablecoins are no longer being viewed simply as crypto assets. For the world's largest payment networks, they are increasingly becoming part of the infrastructure that will power global payments over the next decade.
