Ethereum Foundation Adds Security Veteran Pascal Caversaccio to Its Board

The Ethereum Foundation is reshaping its leadership as the network enters a new phase of growth.

The Foundation has appointed longtime security researcher Pascal Caversaccio to its board of directors. He joins Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, Foundation President Aya Miyaguchi, and Swiss legal counsel Patrick Storchenegger, expanding the board to four members.

Caversaccio will initially serve a one-year voluntary term, bringing years of experience in blockchain security, open-source development and Ethereum governance to one of the network's most influential bodies.

A Familiar Name in Ethereum Security

While not as publicly recognizable as Buterin, Caversaccio has become one of Ethereum's most respected security contributors.

He co-founded SEAL 911, an emergency response initiative that coordinates developers and security researchers during major exploits, helping projects respond quickly to critical vulnerabilities.

His involvement with the Ethereum Foundation predates the appointment. Caversaccio previously served on the Foundation's Silviculture Society, an advisory group focused on preserving Ethereum's core principles, including decentralization, censorship resistance, open-source development, privacy and security.

Beyond governance, he has developed several open-source tools widely used by Ethereum developers, including CreateX, a framework for deterministic smart contract deployment, and snekmate, a security-focused library for Vyper smart contracts. He also maintains one of GitHub's largest collections of Ethereum security resources used by auditors and protocol developers.

Privacy Remains Central

Security has been only one part of Caversaccio's work.

He has become one of Ethereum's strongest advocates for digital privacy and self-sovereignty, publishing The Ethereum Cypherpunk Manifesto in 2024 and Ethereum Privacy: The Road to Self-Sovereignty in 2025.

More recently, he has continued promoting privacy-focused technologies on X, encouraging users to adopt secure operating systems such as GrapheneOS while arguing that individuals should retain control over their personal data.

Following the announcement, Caversaccio summarized his philosophy in two words:

Ethereum's Governance Is Evolving

The appointment comes as Ethereum's governance continues to broaden beyond the Foundation itself.

In recent months, organizations including ETH Ventures, backed by Consensys and BitMine, have emerged to accelerate investment across the Ethereum ecosystem. At the same time, Ethereum Institutional has been created to strengthen relationships with asset managers, financial institutions and enterprise users.

Rather than replacing the Ethereum Foundation, these organizations reflect an ecosystem where responsibility is becoming increasingly distributed across multiple groups with different areas of focus.

Against that backdrop, appointing one of Ethereum's best-known security researchers reinforces the Foundation's role as the long-term steward of the protocol, responsible for safeguarding its security, decentralization and core values while the broader ecosystem continues to expand.
