DTCC to Run First Live Tokenized Asset Trades in July 2026

The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC), the backbone of U.S. securities settlement, is preparing to execute its first live tokenized asset trades in July 2026, with a broader rollout planned for October.

The move marks a significant step by the world's largest post-trade financial services provider into blockchain-based infrastructure, bringing tokenization directly into the core plumbing of global markets. DTCC’s depository subsidiary, DTC, currently custodies over $114 trillion in assets, underscoring the scale of what’s being brought onchain.

What DTCC Is Building

DTCC's tokenization initiative focuses on bringing traditional financial assets onchain through blockchain-based tokenization. The effort targets improvements in three core areas: liquidity, transparency, and efficiency across financial markets.

By converting conventional assets into digital tokens on distributed ledger technology, DTCC aims to modernize settlement processes that have historically relied on fragmented, legacy infrastructure and multi-day clearing cycles.

The July phase will serve as a live testing ground, with limited production trades of tokenized securities processed through DTC’s infrastructure. These assets are expected to maintain the same ownership rights, protections, and entitlements as their traditional counterparts — a key requirement for institutional adoption.

If the initial phase proceeds as planned, DTCC intends to scale the system for a full October 2026 launch, while continuing to test interoperability across multiple blockchain networks and align operational standards with industry participants.

Why It Matters

DTCC processes trillions of dollars in securities transactions annually, making it one of the most systemically important financial institutions in the world. In 2025 alone, its systems handled approximately $4.7 quadrillion in securities value.

Its entry into tokenized asset trading carries weight that smaller blockchain-native platforms cannot match. The organization's infrastructure underpins settlement for equities, bonds, ETFs, and derivatives across U.S. markets.

The initiative also comes with regulatory backing. In December 2025, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) issued a no-action letter allowing DTCC to operate its tokenization service for a defined set of assets — including components of the Russell 1000, major ETFs, and U.S. Treasuries — for an initial three-year period.

The initiative arrives amid a broader push by traditional finance (TradFi) institutions to explore tokenization. Firms like BlackRock, JPMorgan Chase, and Franklin Templeton have already launched tokenized products or blockchain-based settlement pilots.

DTCC's move signals that the infrastructure layer of traditional finance is now actively preparing for tokenized markets — not just the asset managers building on top of it.

Industry Context

Tokenization of real-world assets (RWAs) has emerged as one of the fastest-growing sectors bridging traditional finance and blockchain technology. Boston Consulting Group has previously estimated the tokenized asset market could reach $16 trillion by 2030.

DTCC’s initiative is being developed alongside more than 50 major financial institutions — spanning custodians, asset managers, exchanges, and crypto-native firms — highlighting the level of coordination required to bring tokenized markets into production at scale.

DTCC's direct involvement lends institutional credibility to those projections and could accelerate adoption among market participants who have remained on the sidelines due to operational, regulatory, or interoperability concerns.

The shift also comes as regulators globally become more engaged with tokenized securities frameworks. The SEC and international bodies are increasingly working with market participants to define how blockchain-based assets can operate within existing financial systems.

DTCC's tokenization initiative could fundamentally reshape how assets are issued, settled, and transferred — compressing settlement times, unlocking new liquidity pathways, and bridging the gap between TradFi and blockchain-based markets.
