BlackRock, Coinbase and Strategy Join Forces to Future-Proof Bitcoin
By Lidia Yadlos
The companies that helped bring Bitcoin to Wall Street are now investing in the network itself.
Strategy, BlackRock, Coinbase, Fidelity Digital Assets, ARK Invest, Anchorage Digital, Galaxy Digital, Block and Blockstream have formed the Bitcoin Security Consortium, committing $15 million over the next three years to support developers, security researchers and long-term efforts to protect the Bitcoin network.
The initiative marks a turning point for institutional Bitcoin adoption. After years focused on accumulating BTC through ETFs, corporate treasuries and custody services, the industry's largest players are beginning to invest directly in the infrastructure behind the world's biggest cryptocurrency.
Preparing for the Quantum Era
The Consortium's first priority is preparing Bitcoin for the eventual arrival of quantum computing.
Today's Bitcoin network remains secure, but advances in quantum computing have accelerated industry discussions around how future machines could eventually break the cryptography protecting wallets and transactions.
The Quantum Debate Is Heating Up
The urgency surrounding quantum security has grown considerably this year. Coinbase recently established its own Independent Advisory Board on Quantum Computing and Blockchain, while also announcing engineering contributions to Bitcoin's post-quantum roadmap alongside its participation in the new Consortium.
Galaxy Digital has also committed up to $5 million through its own Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative, funding work on quantum-resistant cryptography, wallet migration tools and security audits.
Despite the growing attention, the immediate risk remains low. Prediction market Polymarket currently assigns only around a 14% probability that quantum computing will successfully break Bitcoin by the end of 2027, highlighting that while the threat is taken seriously, most market participants still view it as a longer-term challenge.
